What is Act 4 Publishing?

Act 4 Publishing is the fourth act in Scott Dunbier’s career. It began when he was an art dealer in the 1980s and ’90s, selling a myriad of classic pages and covers by some of the art forms most incredible talents, as well as representing some of the greatest modern masters, including Mike Mignola, Brian Bolland, Simon Bisley, and many others.

Act one.

In 1995, at the invitation of Jim Lee, Scott left the safe confines of art dealing, moved cross-country, and joined WildStorm Productions (which later became a part of DC Comics). At WildStorm, Scott served as special projects editor, editor-in chief, and eventually became executive editor. He was responsible for establishing the America’s Best Comics line of Alan Moore books, oversaw the Cliffhanger imprint (featuring Danger Girl and Battle Chasers), Warren Ellis’ The Authority and Planetary, and much more. During his tenure at DC, he created the Absolute format, which soon became the industry standard.

Act two.

In 2008 Scott joined IDW Publishing as special projects editor, eventually becoming vice president. He is best known for creating the Artist’s Edition format at IDW, of which he produced approximately 90 different versions of these award-winning and unwieldy behemoths. Scott is also responsible for Darwyn Cooke’s series of Parker graphic novels (based on Richard Stark’s classic crime fiction), the Berkeley Breathed Bloom County Library series, archival collections of various Dave Stevens projects, (including The Rocketeer), Walter Simonson’s Ragnarök (featuring Thor, based on Norse mythology), and numerous others.

Act three.

In 2024, together with his wife Amanda, Scott launched his own company, Act 4 Publishing. Under this banner, he will continue to produce a variety of collections and comics. Some will be familiar to you while others will be brand new. But all, we hope, will be tied together by a sense of quality, and love and respect, for the sequential art form.
